Did you know that the Florida Panhandle is a major stopover for migratory butterflies? The Butterfly and Moth Society of North America has recognized and verified more than 100 species of butterflies in Okaloosa County, including the well-recognized black-and-orange Monarch butterfly, which will be using the local flowers as a rest stop on the way to Mexico over the next few weeks. The Henderson Beach State Park nature trail, The Destin Library, and Eden Garden State Park are great places to see beautiful butterfly gardens and catch a glimpse of these natural wonders. During the spring and summer, the Navarre Butterfly House makes a great day trip. Located on the Navarre Boardwalk and Pier, the butterfly garden is nestled among some of the town’s best attractions. While the attraction is closed for the season, it will reopen on October 4-5 for Monarch Madness, a two day event celebrating and exploring the magnificent Monarch Butterfly. You can also celebrate the butterfly during the first weekend in November during Rosemary Beach’s Annual “Flutterby†Festival, held in the towns butterfly garden. During the Flutterby Festival, local artists and artisans will showcase their crafts, and there will be plenty of events for the whole family. The migration of the Monarch butterfly is another reason to enjoy the Emerald Coast during the fall.
