Golf is a sport the whole family can enjoy. Even preschoolers can enjoy a day at the golf course. At many Destin area golf courses, kids are not only welcome, but some golf courses even offer special golf programs just for children as well as Junior golf training. Many area courses are also more than willing to let your little golfers try their hand at putting, driving, and chipping. Of course, golf etiquette applies, so be sure to be courteous to the other golfers by offering to let them play through if you think you might be slowing them down. Additionally, choose a T-time later in the afternoon, when the more serious golfers have either retired to the 19th hole or have finished the majority of their game. Make sure your kids have the right equipment. Clubs that are too stiff, too long or too heavy will make the experience frustrating. Appropriately sized clubs will help your young golfer develop correct form for their swing. Local pros recommend starting out with just a few clubs; a 7 or a 9 iron, a 3 or 4 wood, and a putter. Once your child starts lessons or playing regularly, you can invest in a full set of junior clubs. Let your preschooler swing away with set of plastic clubs. Save formal lessons and camps until they start elementary school.  Smaller kids can also take advantage of the practice green for chipping and putting contests. Kids love competition! If you are offering instruction, be visual, rather than verbal. When teaching children golf technique and form, demonstrate as often as possible. Kids will get more from a hands-on demonstration than they will from a lecture on the correct way to swing.
