Five Star Properties Makes Large Linen Donation to Opportunity Place

On December 18, 2015 Five Star Properties had the opportunity to make a donation of 1,795 pounds of linens to Opportunity Place. Opportunity Place is a Non-Profit that provides short-term housing for women and families without homes. Single women can are provided housing for 45 days and families can stay for 90 days. The Fort Walton Beach location can house up to 36 people in need and provides families with the resources they need to get back on their feet, secure a job, and afford a home. Receiving this donation of linens from Five Star will help Opportunity Place provide high-quality, clean, and comfortable linens to the women and families living with them.

When living without a permanent home, a comfortable night’s sleep in a clean bed can really make a difference in a person’s optimism. The liens donated included towels, blankets, pillows, bed sheets, duvets, and duvet inserts. “There are a lot of people in need,” said Five Star’s Housekeeping director Amy Lundbald. “We would rather give to someone who would use [the linens] than to someone who will just resell them,” she continued. The linens are in good condition with only minor use.

Members of the Five Star team met up with Opportunity Place volunteers at 9:00 a.m. on Friday morning to unload the trailer carrying the linens. Within 24 hours the linens were already being put to use. Opportunity Place Executive Director, Debra McDaniel informed us just hours later that, “Volunteers [had] gone through almost all of it and some had already been distributed.” The lines will be used on site in the shelter and also given to some of the women and families to take with them once they secure their own housing. Opportunity Place also plans to hand out some of the linens at their next food drive.

The Five Star team was given a tour of the shelter, which was touched the emotions of many of our staff. We plan on finding opportunities to donate other items in the future as a continued supporter of Opportunity House. Volunteering is an effective way to make changes in the community, and anyone interested in volunteering or learning more about Opportunity Place can visit their website opifwb.org or they can contact Sandra Shelton at sandra@opifwb.org.
