Spring break and warmer temperatures are just around the corner, and many co-eds are planning their annual trip to the Emerald Coast and the Beaches of South Walton. Both the Walton and Okaloosa County Sherif's Departments are reminding visitors to stay safe and be smart during their trips, and here are three quick reminders for a safe spring break.
-Be Smart. Both the Walton and Okaloosa County Sheriff's departments will be detaining underage drinkers. Please remember that the drinking age is 21 in Florida. Additionally, drivers caught while driving under the influence or driving while intoxicated will be prosecuted. If you're enjoying your night on the town, please don't drink and drive.
-Be Safe. Know and respect the county's beach flag warning systems. Green means there is a low hazard in the water, yellow means a moderate hazard, red means high hazards, and double red means the water is closed to the public. Remember that if you are caught in a riptide, or rip current, remain calm, and swim with the current until it breaks, and then head to shore.
-Be Courteous. Everyone is out to enjoy their day on the beach, so keep language and behavior "family friendly". Remember that glass is prohibited on the beach, and dogs are not allowed on the beach in Okaloosa County. Enjoy your time on the beautiful sugar white sand beaches and don't forget the sunscreen!
