Okaloosa County Daily Report

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is collecting and analyzing water, sediment, and oil samples from Florida’s coastal waters in response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. These samples are being collected for a variety of purposes. There is a delay from when the samples are collected to when the results are reported due to the time that it takes to deliver the samples to the lab and then analyze the samples. We are striving for a four day turnaround time. Results will be reported on a daily basis.
New Information:
• Proposed Sampling – Continued water sampling proposed for Tuesday (7/13), and Thursday (7/15).
• Note: New water quality result information highlighted in yellow below.
The following sampling has been performed in Okaloosa County:
• Baseline sampling: One sample was collected at each of four sites in Choctawhatchee Bay and one at Henderson Beach. None of these samples had detectable levels of petroleum.

Table Explanation:
• Water sample – indicates a water sample that was taken, no oil was visible in the water when the sample was taken.
• Sand sample – indicates a sand sample that was taken to evaluate any potential petroleum contamination.

• 10 cm from visible tar ball/1 meter from visible tar ball – These are types of proximity sampling that means samples were collected at known distances from oil. This sampling is performed when the oil in the water is sparse enough that a bather might reasonably expect to swim in the water without coming into contact with the oil.
• Collected for dispersant analysis – These samples are collected to attempt to detect dispersant. The first priority is to collect the sample in proximity to oil when oil is present. When oil is not present the second priority is to sample in locations were oil was previously present, the third priority is to collect the sample where no oil contamination is, or ever was, present.
